Vegan Old Fashioned Donuts

If you're craving a fried, glazed donu, but don't feel like waiting for dough to rise then go ahead and try this old fashioned donut recipe. It's super easy to make. Scroll down or the recipe.

STEP BY STEP PROCESS:

Mix the dry ingredients, then add in the wet and mix until well incorporated and no dry bits left.

Let the dough sit and relax for about 10 minutes. Then on a lightly floured surface, knead 3-4 minutes to develop the gluten and make it a little smoother. If dough is still sticky, dust slightly more flour.

Roll into 3/8" - 1/2" thick slab

Cut into donut rounds

Using a blade, you can slice designs into them. Mine didn't come out too well but perhaps you'll do better. :)

Fry about 45 seconds each side or until light golden

Let cool on cooling rack 15-20 minutes with tray underneath

Whisk icing ingredients together until all lumps are gone. Add more sugar if more thickness is desired or add liquids in small amounts if thinner glaze is desired.

Coat donuts with glaze and let dry on cooling rack. Coat again a 2nd time.

Total Time: 30-40 minutes

Yields: 5-6 donuts approx (or 4 standard sized ones and 2 small ones)

INGREDIENTS - DOUGH:

  • 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour

  • 3/4 tsp baking powder

  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

  • 3/8 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup sour cream (I used Kitehill Brand)

  • 3/8 cup unsweetend plant milk

  • 1 tbsp non dairy butter

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • Oil for frying

GLAZE: Makes enough glaze for 2 coats

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/3 aquafaba (chick pea juice) or plant milk

Glaze Instructions: Whiskit all together in a bowl until all lumps are gone, voila. Done. Add a few drops more liquid to make it less thick or more sugar to make it more thick. Do this as you're waiting for the donuts to cool.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a mixing bowl combine all the dry ingredients first. Then add the wet and mix until well incorporated.

  2. Let the dough rest for about 10 minutes. Then on a slightly floured surface knead for 3-4 minutes.

  3. Once the dough is smooth enough, roll into a 3/8" - 1/2" thick slab and cut into dough rounds. With a blade cut any designs you want into it at this time.

  4. Fill a pot about 1- 1 1/2" deep with oil. Once oil is hot, fry on medium heat until light golden. About 30-45 seconds per side.

  5. Let cool on cooling rack about 15 minutes and go make the glaze.

  6. In a bowl that's larger than the donuts, prepare the glaze. Then dip the donuts into the glaze and coat throughout. Transfer to cooling rack with tray underneath to let dry - about 15 minutes. Do a second coating. Or if your glaze it thick enough you can skip additional coating.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Try adding some cocoa powder to your dough to make it into chocolate donuts! Or try making a chocolate glaze by dipping the donuts into melted chocolate.
